The Gorilla Glass is famous and common to most premium smartphones today, used by branded devices such as HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and Sony. The glass is also used to protect laptops, tablets, computers, and windows. But how much punishment can it take before getting destroyed?

At the CES 2013, Corning announced the next generation of glass surfaces which will deliver thinner and stronger touchscreens. Gorilla Glass is a special type of chemically strengthened material that's designed to resist scratches and other surface impact. Unlike standard glasses, it requires higher compression to damage it.

Can a gorilla scratch this kind of glass?

If a real gorilla tries the older model for Corning's, the animal might get a chance. But with the recent improvements to the new Gorilla Glass 3 which is flexible and super-strong, it is three times less likely to get scratched, and 40 per cent less visibility of scratches.

How tough can it be?

The makers made a demonstration of the Gorilla Glass at CES 2013 against a strengthened adhesive glass.

Test One - Catch a 135g Steel Ball : Gorilla Glass 3 versus a strengthened adhesive glass (same thickness)

And the result was i favour of the Gorilla Glass which did not have any spiderweb-like crack unlike with the adhesive glass.

Test Two - Catch me again : Gorilla Glass 3 versus an aluminium steel (same thickness)

This time, the platform was raised higher to increase the point of impact by three times. Using the same metal ball, the aluminium received an indent and the Gorilla Glass ignored the ball with the second hit.

Test Three - Push More: Gorilla Glass 3

The same Gorilla Glass hit twice by the metal ball went under a press with 100 pounds of pressure. After the test, no cracks or breakage were found on the glass.

Truth About the Gorilla Glass

Gorilla Glass is toughened by ion exchange since the material is submersed in molten potassium salt at a temperature of 400 degrees Celsius. After cooling from the salt bath, is a layer of more resistant glass is placed to prevent damage from everyday use.

According to the makers of Gorilla Glass, enough abuse can subject the glass break; however, in most real-world events, it is likely to survive scratches, chips or breaks. No sound test confirms shattering the Gorilla Glass 3.
