Singer and first-time mom, Mariah Carey has expressed deep regret for participating in a 2006 event in Caribbean after finding out that she was hired and paid to perform to a family member of Libyan dictator, Col. Muammar Gaddafi.

Cited by UsMagazine, the popular diva has asserted that she will take closer scrutiny of all her singing engagements in the future.

"I was naive and unaware of who I was booked to perform for," Carey said in a statement, according to UsMagazine.

The singer reiterated that she lost face after realizing that she had been paid $1 million to perform at a party organized by a member of a Gaddafi family in the Caribbean in December 2006.

She said, "I feel horrible and embarrassed to have participated in this mess."

Carey joined other artists who have performed blindly at the Caribbean Christmas celebration, including Beyonce, Usher and Nelly Furtado. All artists have been under the media scrutiny recently after their names were linked to Col. Muammar Gaddafi, now facing investigation for possible war crimes. Pressures are on for the stars to donate the performance fee for good causes.

Carey’s representative, Cindi Berger claimed that her client is not only bent on returning the money but has also vowed to continue working for good causes by establishing her own foundation.

"Mariah has and continues to donate time, money, and countless hours of personal service both here and abroad," Berger tells UsMagazine.
