The World Environment Day celebration is set to take place on Thursday, June 5, and this day will be an important date for "The Vampire Diaires" actor Ian Somerhalder. The Ian Somerhalder Foundation (ISF) excitedly announced on their Web page that the foundation's 35-year-old president will be designated as a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Goodwill Ambassador.

The announcement further revealed Ian Somerhalder's first task as a UNEP ambassador. The TVD star must encourage as many people as he can that will pledge to the "Go Greener" challenge together with his fellow ambassadors.

The ISF page noted that their big boss is particularly calling on communities, businesses, schools and individuals to connect and use their resources in helping others out. "Humans are currently consuming far more than our planet can provide or sustain. We are polluting our air with carbon emissions, destroying our forests and species, and filling our seas with plastic and waste. The time is now to go greener by making choices that are good for people and the planet," Somerhalder's statement in the ISF Web page reads.

Ian Somerhalder even posted about his task via Twitter on May 19. The actor simply wrote the message "Who's on my team?!" on his Twitter account @iansomerhalder with the hashtag #WEDchallenge and the link to UNEP.org.

Ian Somerhalder is known for his commitment to environmental causes and charity events. The Wet Paint report revealed the actor appeared at the Eat (RED), Drink (RED) Save Lives campaign launch held on Monday, June 2, in New York City where the (RED) organization joined forces with the iconic brands to bring exciting products and evens as a new means of fighting AIDS.

Participating locations will be donating a portion of the proceeds to The Global Fund during the latest campaign's schedule of June 1 to June 10. Furthermore, one hundred percent of the raised money will go to the AIDS supply medication and education worldwide.

Meanwhile, RYOT.org reports the Ian Somerhalder "Go Greener" team currently leads the challenge against Gisele Bundchen, Don Cheadle and Yaya Toure. At this time, the heartthrob actor is in Bridgetown, Barbados to join the 2014 World Environment Day celebrations.
