Ian Somerhalder: 'Vampire Diaries' Actor Officially Introduces Newest Addition To His Animal Family With Girlfriend Nikki Reed On Instagram

Couple Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed officially introduced the newest addition to their animal family through an adorable shared image on Instagram. The announcement was made on Ian Somerhalder's Instagram account on Sunday, Nov. 2, where the proud parents reveal the name of their adopted cat.

Nikki Reed adopted a cat in Georgia and posted about it on her Instagram account iamnikkireed on Oct. 15. The "Twilight" actress shared in her Instagram post that she went to an animal shelter and ended up adopting the little feline. "What should we name her?" Reed posted. Click HERE to see photo.

"The Vampire Diaries" actor Ian Somerhalder shared an adorable photo of himself holding up the adopted cat with girlfriend Nikki Reed cuddling behind him on Instagram. "The newest addition to the family. Her name is Sohalia. Thank you @iamnikkireed for finding us this amazing kid in Conyers Georgia," the 35-year-old heartthrob actor posted on his Instagram account iansomerhalder as a caption to the shared image. Ian Somerhalder further shared in his post that Sohalia has been labeled in her cage as a "feral/not friendly" cat but the TVD star is grateful that Nikki Reed adopted the little feline. "We would have never found out that she is the most loving kitty on the planet and she may have been put down," the actor added.

Then, Ian Somerhalder encouraged a change in the adoption process of animal shelters. The actor hopes that the people working at the animal shelters and the people making policies for the shelter workers will take more time in getting to know the animals brought in so they can inform the potential animal adopters properly.

According to an Ecorazzi report, Ian Somerhalder also expressed on Instagram his concern over animals getting hurt and killed. On Thursday, Oct. 30, the actor shared an image of himself with his pet dogs with a lengthy caption encouraging people to show animal compassion and join him in the current project of his foundation, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation (ISF).

"Chilly early mornings with my girls... It absolutely BLOWS my mind that we hurt and kill millions of these animals per year. Let's stop abandoning, fighting and killing these incredible creatures-adopt, spay, neuter, donate, volunteer whatever you can do to help-PLEASE! I promise you'll feel SO GOOD!" Somerhalder posted. The actor added that an incredible project is currently happening in order to help ISF where his interested followers can enter and win a chance of filming a scene with him on "The Vampire Diaries" Season 6.
