The CW TV series "The Vampire Diaries" gets renewed for a new season and actor Ian Somerhalder gave his reaction to the big news on Twitter. The 35-year-old TVD star expressed his excitement and gratitude for "The Vampire Diaries" Season 6.

"The Vampire Diaries" is currently on an airing break due to the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and the Atlanta winter storm delayed the filming of new Season 5 episodes but the issues did not stop Ian Somerhalder to celebrate on Twitter regarding the TV series' new season renewal. The actor wrote on his Twitter account @iansomerhalder on Valentine's Day, February 14, after receiving the good news

Another work that will keep Ian Somerhalder busy is the Ian Somerhalder Foundation (ISF) Animan Sanctuary following the announcement on the ISF Emergency Medical Care Grant for Animals. According to the One Green Planet report, the medical care grant for animals will be providing financial assistance to the "animal welfare organizations, agencies, and in some cases individual rescuers, responsible for the care of animals recovering from abuse, neglect or injuries suffered from a traumatic event."

The report further noted that the animal grant will allow the organizations to focus on caring for the animals since several shelters and rescues were strained with financial resources especially during emergency animal care situations. The issues that ISF covers include ending animal cruelty, animal programs like the "species specific sterilization drugs," transferring and re-training of abandoned animals into assistive and therapy guides as well as supporting and creating sustainable strategies for the "no-kill shelters."

Meanwhile, the Carter Matt report reveals the new promo photos for "The Vampire Diaries" Season 5 that did not make the cut during CW's initial release. The photos show TVD stars Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore) and Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore) in a floating shot with their arms stretched out like flying superheroes. Click HERE to see the photos.

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 5 airs Thursday nights at 8 pm ET on the CW Network. Ian Somerhalder returns on-screen as bad boy vampire Damon Salvatore on February 27 with the brand new Episode 14 titled "No Exit."
