Ian Somerhalder: 'Vampire Diaries' Actor Talks About Damon's Heartbreak Over Elena, Salvatore Vampire To Distract Himself With Desire Of Bringing Back Bonnie
Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) dream of finally returning to Elena (Nina Dobrev) in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 6 got shattered when his girlfriend erased the memories of loving him. Actor Ian Somerhalder recently revealed in an interview that the current situation breaks Damon's heart and makes the Salvatore vampire want to do something to distract himself.
In an Access Hollywood report, TVD cast member Ian Somerhalder shared what his vampire character currently feels after learning that Elena does not remember their romantic relationship. "Imagine you're away for four months... you come back and the one woman you want to be with... not even doesn't remember you, remembers nothing, only the bad s**t," the 35-year-old heartthrob actor explained to the reporters on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the TVD set in Atlanta, Georgia.
Ian Somerhalder added that the situation is something that will be "invariably difficult" for Damon Salvatore to recover from. The TVD star further shared that Damon will continue to be heartbroken over Elena because of the selfless thing that he did in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 6, episode 7 titled "Do You Remember the First Time?" which is letting Elena go.
"I think he's pretty proud of that, but I think ultimately... he's hurting big time," Somerhalder shared. However, the actor teased that Damon Salvatore will be different in reacting to difficult situations this time around.
The old Damon Salvatore will probably be out there attacking innocent people because he is upset over something but Ian Somerhalder teased that this character has now evolved. "I think the man is evolving a little bit, which may be boring as s**t for the audience. I don't know, an evolved Damon Salvatore may not be any good," the actor revealed.
When asked what could have changed Damon, Ian Somerhalder believes it was the time that his character spent with Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) when the two of them were stuck in 1994 Mystic Falls with a psychopathic witch named Kai (Chris Wood). The actor teased in a TV Fanatic interview that Damon now has a really soft spot for Bonnie.
In the previous episode, Damon finds a sign that Bonnie is still alive which will make him distracted from the heartbreak of letting Elena go. Ian Somerhalder teased that his character will be putting so much energy into finding Bonnie and bringing her back.
"He's hell bent on getting her back. It's different this time. He's really trying to do the right thing," Somerhalder shared. Click HERE to watch the TVD cast member talking about the Damon-Bonnie or "Bamon" relationship.
"The Vampire Diaries" airs Thursday nights at 8/7c on the CW Network.
