In spite of industrywide speculation that Apple will announce the next-generation iPhone on September, new reports have moved the launch back to October.

With the impending launch of the iPhone 5 coming in the next few months, rumors have been flying fast and furious. The current theory about a September announcement came after Cupertino didn't reveal an iPhone upgrade at WWDC.

Apple is planning an event Sept. 7 but has given no clear indication what it will announce then. Last year's September event was used to launch an upgrade to the iPods, an update to Apple's operating system and more. Industry insiders had pegged this September's event to be the launch date of the iPhone 5.

The rumor mill seems to be swinging in favor of an October launch. According to a new blog post from the Loop, author Jim Dalrymple wrote that there will be no unveiling in September.

"According to my sources, Apple will not have an event or launch the next iPhone on September 7. It's hard to say how that specific date was chosen by the sites that started the rumor, other than it fits into the timeline of previous Apple events."

Another report on Tipb.com backs an October date, saying that the new iPhone 5 would be on sale on Oct. 7 in the U.S. It's still not certain whether Apple will be releasing the new iPhone 5 or a cheaper version of the iPhone 4 called the "iPhone 4S" which supposedly Apple had finished before WWDC.

Still with rumors all over the place it's hard to place any concrete launch date for these phones. Expect Apple to announce a new iPhone before the year's end.
