Apple's upcoming smartphones dubbed as iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S may have a new processor this year.

The rumour said that the devices will include a new brand of processors aside from the usual A-series processor it used for the past years.

According to tech blog DigiTimes, the processors which will be used in the iPhone 6 and future models are reportedly in production. Moreover, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has signed a deal with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE:TMC) to build the processors.

The report added that TSMC has a three-year contract with Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) to build the A8, A9, and A9x processors also.

The A-series chips described in the report will be made using 10 nm, 16 nm and 20 nm process nodes. Sources apparently told DigiTimes that the A8 processors will go into small volume production next month. Production of the chips is then expected to ramp up after December. TSMC is said to be planning to install new 20 nm fab equipment that can process 50,000 wafers during the first three months of next year.

DigiTimes' sources also said part of the upcoming production capacity, which is expected to be around 20,000 wafers, could be upgraded later to build 16 nm chips. Then toward the end of the third quarter of next year, TSMC is said to be planning to volume produce the A9 and A9X processors.

There is also an unlikely rumour that Apple will feature an Intel processor once the latter will release chips for mobile devices.

This rumour could be due to the reports that Apple is nearing the end of its contract with business partner and rival Samsung. Samsung has been manufacturing the processors for the Cupertino-based company.

The next iPhone is rumoured to feature Retina or IGZO screen display, A7 quad core chip processor, iOS 7, 128GB internal storage, 13 mega-pixel camera, and longer battery life. The lack of NFC support on the iPhone 5 was one of the biggest criticisms aimed at Apple's smartphone.

Meanwhile, the cheaper iPhone 5S is rumoured to sport a plastic casing, 4-inch screen display, dual core processor and 8-megapixel camera. The smartphone is speculated to be available in five to six different colors.

Both Apple smartphones are rumoured to include a fingerprint sensor technology for added security. The rumour is strengthened by the report that Apple bought a fingerprint technology firm Authentec last year.

It is initially reported that the new iPhones will be launched in June along with the upgraded iOS. However, other reports stated that the devices will make its debut in September.

The Apple chief Tim Cook also dropped several hints that the upcoming iPhone 6 and 5S will be released later this year. Cook said that no new products are to launch before the end of the year.

However, In the D11 interview of Apple's chief Tim Cook subtly suggested that the company will not release a low cost iPhone or a phablet this year. Tim Cook stressed that Apple invests time and effort in making each phone that serves various markets rather than making a myriad of phones aim to serve specific users.

But if rumours proved to be and Apple will indeed release iPhone 5S and iPhone Light this year, previous rumour that iPhone 6 may come next year.
