Jarryd Hayne News: Channel 7 boots airing of 49ers game after NFL rookie's demotion
Jarryd Hayne has been dropped from the San Francisco 49ers’ active roster last week, then immediately joined the team’s practice squad after clearing waivers. With the Australian rugby league star action-less during game days, Channel 7 has reportedly stopped broadcasting 49ers games unless Hayne gets back in action.
According to News, Aussie fans would not get to see any 49ers game on Channel 7 after Hayne was axed from San Francisco’s 53-man roster squad. The network had been screening every 49ers game this season, apart from the games owned by ESPN, but has instead opted to show the Denver Broncos game against the Indianapolis Colts in the 8:25 a.m. AEDT timeslot.
Hayne was not picked in the 49ers’ 17-16 win over the Atlanta Falcons despite primary punt returner Reggie Bush and top running back Carlos Hyde in the team’s injured list. The 27-year-old rookie also looks to spend the remainder of the season in the bookshelves of the 49ers as the club chose to play newly signed veteran running backs Shaun Draughn and Pierre Thomas.
However, the bright side for Hayne spending time in the 49ers’ practice squad is he could study the game more and hone his skills at the running back and punt return position as noted by SB Nation’s Niners Nation writer David Fucillo. Hayen is also eligible to get picked up by other 31 NFL teams should a spot opens up for him as long as he remains on the practice squad.
As bad as it sounds, Hayne’s golden chance to wear his No. 38 jersey again is for more injuries to hit the 49ers, especially at punt return position.
Hayne is not the only one sacked by the 49ers. Star quarterback Colin Kaepernick was demoted to the bench by 49ers coach Jim Tomsula, opting instead for backup QB Blaine Gabbert. But unlike Hayne, Kaepernick seemed to disagree with Tomsula’s assessment with the quarterback.
"I'm not out of breath, so I don't understand that reference,” Kaepernick said, reports the Sydney Morning Herald. "I don't believe in pressure. Pressure is not being prepared for what you want to do. To me, I've played full seasons and had success.”
Gabbert made his first start for the 49ers and was a game-manager in the team’s third victory of the 2015-2016 NFL season. Gabbert served as a spark for a struggling offence that was formerly captained by Kaepernick. He threw 185 yards on 15 of 25 passing, along with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Draughn, who signed with the team on Monday and started over first choice RB Kendall Gaskins, looked comfortable in rushing for 50 yards on 10 carries, including a 30-year burst in the first half.
The 49ers, now with a 3-6 slate, would enjoy their much-needed bye week to get key players recovered from injuries. San Francisco will visit the Seattle Seahawks in their next game on Nov. 22. The Seahawks defeated the 49ers in their first meeting 20-3 last month.
