The Duchess of Cambridge looked glamorous and royal than ever in a red dress while she attended her first ever state banquet at the Buckingham Palace to welcome Chinese president President Xi Jinping and his wife Madame Pang Liyuan to the United Kingdom. Although Kate Middleton’s dress looked simple, it’s reportedly the meaning behind the colour that matters since it speaks of a certain Chinese tradition.

The red Jenny Packham gown that the Duchess of Cambridge wore was reportedly planned out. “Art of Being” designer Elizabeth Emanuel, who had co-designed the late Princess Diana’s wedding dress, told People that it was no accident that Kate wore the colour red considering their Chinese guests.

“Red is very important as a statement in itself as it matches the colour of the Chinese flag and it means good fortune,” she said.

Cultural China explained the colour red in Chinese tradition also signifies “happiness.” Kate certainly seemed happy as she shared a toast with the Chinese president during the dinner banquet as seen in this photo shared by People.

Likewise, the colour red in Chinese tradition is reportedly also used to ward off evil spirits because it symbolises fire. In contrast with Western belief that red symbolises sudden outburst of emotions, danger or anger, red for the Chinese connotes warmth and safety.

The Duchess of Cambridge matched her red gown with the Lotus Flower crown and a pair of diamond dropped earrings. Emanuel marvelled at how the simple dress looked sophisticated and stylish on Kate since it really complimented her figure.

“It’s elegant and graceful, which shows off her figure as well. Even after her second child, you can see she has the most beautiful figure,” she told People.

The designer likewise praised how the gown was the perfect wardrobe for Kate to wear at the state banquet. It reportedly made the duchess stand out but not too extravagant.

“She’s a young woman and the capped sleeves are perfectly appropriate and scooped neckline is elegant. Her hair in a chignon is beautiful as well. She just looks absolutely right for the occasion — glamorous but not over the top,” she added.
