Katy Perry Proves She Can Sell 'Prism' Without Getting Naked, Debuts at No.1 on Billboard
Katy Perry's newly released album "Prism" has surpassed Miley Cyrus' "BANGERZ" and has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard top 200 chart. The "Roar" songstress has also set a new record for the largest sales week of 2013 for a female artist in the United States.
Perry's "Prism" has sold over 286,000 units in the first week of release in America, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It is the best ever sales for her career to date and projects a nearly 50 percent increase from the first week sales of her 2010 album "Teenage Dream," which debuted at No. 1 in eight countries and spent more than two years on the Billboard 200.
The only other pop album to have a bigger release this year is a male artist Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories." The album sold 339,000 copies.
In comparison, singer Miley Cyrus' "BANGERZ" sold an impressive 270,000 units in its first week. What a comeback for Katy Perry who recently said in an interview that she does not want to take help of nudity and scanty clothes (like Rihanna and Miley) to promote her album as she believes her music is enough for her fans to appreciate her.
However, the 28-year-old singer's latest album "Prism" is completely different from her previous record "Teenage Dream" as we see a more mature, spiritual Perry in Prism. As the singer herself acknowledges that she wanted to do something new this time and has used her life's experience as an inspiration for all the tracks on the album.
"I didn't want to do Teenage Dream 2.0," the "Roar" singer recently told Billboard magazine of her new album. "Teenage Dream was highly conceptual, super-pop art. Prism is more organic, au naturale, vulnerable and honest, but still has the same amount of fun."
Perry underwent divorce from Russel Brand and had a dark patch in her life where she did not want to continue living. She never thought of returning to music at that lowest point in her life but she did with the help of her new boyfriend John Mayer, who asked Perry to take an inspiration from her darkest patch in life and write. And what a way to make a comeback! Perry is back to the success she was use to prior to her divorce.
