Konami Confirms Cancellation of ‘Silent Hills’ As Guillermo del Toro & Norman Reedus Say Project is Dead
The big question following recent reports of a major fallout between Hideo Kojima and “Metal Gear”publisher, Konami revolved around what would happen with in-development “Silent Hills.” It appears that question has now been answered, with the publisher confirming that the much anticipated horror title has been cancelled.
Gamespot reports that Konami initially declined to comment on rumours of the game’s cancellation. However, the publisher appears to have changed tack on Monday, following statements by “Silent Hills” collaborators Guillermo del Toro and Norman Reedus.
As noted by Kotaku, del Toro’s spoke to an audience at a San Francisco Film Society event and confirmed that he was no longer working with Hideo Kojima or Konami on the project. Konami’s statement confirmed as much, but left room for possible future collaborations.
“Konami is committed to new ‘Silent Hill’ titles, however, the embryonic Silent Hills project developed with Guillermo del Toro and featuring the likeness of Norman Reedus will not be continued. In terms of Kojima and del Toro being involved, discussions on future Silent Hill projects are currently underway, and please stay tuned for further announcements,” said the publisher.
Originally unveiled in August 2014, “Silent Hills” was planned as the next major entry in the “Silent Hill” series of games. Announced via a highly effective viral playable teaser called “P.T.,” the project was set to be a collaboration between “Metal Gear Solid” director Hideo Kojima and Hollywood director Guillermo del Toro, featuring the likeness of “Walking Dead” star Norman Reedus.
Progress on the game appears to have come undone following a breakdown in the relationship between Kojima and his longtime publisher, Konami. Rumours of trouble between the two parties began to emerge in late March, after Konami began to systematically remove Kojima’s name and that of his studio from all related videogame box art and websites.
Following a firestorm of speculation, the publisher issued a statement saying that work on the currently in-development “Metal Gear Solid V” would remain unaffected. However, Gamespot notes that the waters beneath the surface are not quite as calm, reporting that Kojima and the rest of his senior management team are no longer full-time employees, and will part ways with the studio upon the completion of “MGS5.”
