Kylie Minogue refuses to get married in Australia because of marriage inequality
Pop singer/songwriter Kylie Minogue and British actor Joshua Sasse are engaged and would love get married in Melbourne, but the couple refuse to do so until marriage equality is finalised in Australia.
Minogue and Sasse are the pioneers of the “Say ‘I Do’ Down Under” campaign which fights for the legalisation of same-sex marriage in Australia.
Sasse, 28, said he was “shocked” when he found out earlier this year that gay people are not allowed to marry in his fiancée’s home country.
"I simply can't fathom on any level whether it's moral or religious or anything that I have the right to get married and to marry the person that I love and that somebody else doesn't because of their sexual orientation. Why are we any more important than anybody else?” he said on the breakfast show "Sunrise."
The actor encourages others to “raise our voice and public support for change.”
Minogue has formerly commented on how “backward” the country is with regards to marriage equality, saying that other countries that have legalised gay marriage are not diminished.
“Love is love,” added the 48-year-old pop star.
A plebiscite on marriage equality has been determined by the Turnbull government.
Australian actress Margot Robbie, famous for her roles in films such as “The Wolf Of Wall Street” and “Suicide Squad,” expressed support on the couple’s campaign. She wore a black “Say ‘I Do’ Down Under” shirt when she hosted American comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL) over the weekend.
This is not the first time that a celebrity couple refused to tie the knot because of marriage inequality. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie felt the same way, as did Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell.
Sasse and Minogue first met on the set of “Galavant,” where Sasse plays the title role of Sir Gary Galavant. They made their engagement public on Feb. 26.
Sasse has a son named Sebastian with his former girlfriend, Italian actress Francesca Cini.
