Modern technologies like the everyday laptop and the widely available Wi-Fi routers make life more convenient for everyone. However, what could be technologically convenient could be sexually inconvenient as laptops and Wi-Fi connection hurt what men prize the most - their fertility.

The use of laptop computers that are wirelessly connected to the internet and positioned near the male reproductive organs can decrease human sperm quality by damaging it, qccording to a recent study done by Argentinian scientists from Nascentis Medicina Reproductive in Cordoba.

In the study, researchers got semen samples from 29 healthy men and placed them under a laptop that was downloading data from the internet. After four hours, the researchers compared the results between the semen samples that were under the laptop and those that were placed away from the computer but with the same temperature as those under the computer.

They discovered that the samples that were exposed to Wi-Fi had three times as much DNA damage than the other samples. In addition, around 25% of the sperm samples that was placed under the laptop were no longer active, compared to the 14% of samples that were placed away from the computer.

Researchers credit this sperm cell damage to Wi-Fi radiation and not from the laptop, saying that the computer's radiation is negligible.

However, laptops are still not in the clear when it comes to adversely affecting male fertility. According to a study led by Dr. Yefim Sheynkin back in December 2004, using laptops in a sitting position and the heat coming from the laptop itself can reduce sperm count.

This is because the sitting position required to balance the laptop can increase the scrotum's temperature by as much as 2.1 degrees Celsius. And in addition, the heat coming from the computer itself can further increase the temperature by another 0.7 degrees Celsius.

This presents a huge threat because experts found that just one degree Celsius increase in temperature can reduce sperm count by as much as 40%.

So what can men, those who are constantly using laptops in a sitting position or always using wireless connection, do to help their cells? According to Mayo Clinic, men can take simple steps to help produce healthy sperm.

Taking multivitamins, specifically vitamins E and C, can aid in optimal sperm production and function. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants can also help improve sperm health.

Aside from this, managing stress, getting plenty of exercise, and watching one's weight are other things that experts recommend men do to help their sperm.
