'The Last Of Us 2' director Neil Druckmann reveals story will revolve around hate, promises not to disappoint
Over the weekend, Naughty Dog released a trailer for “The Last Of Us 2,” which had the whole hall of the PlayStation Experience Keynote screaming and wanting more. The 4-minute clip featured an older Ellie -- seemingly hardened by the life that she and Joel have lived -- who was ready for and wanted nothing but revenge.
The video confirmed that “The Last Of Us 2” would be a direct sequel to the original, which was released in 2013. In the trailer, audiences see that Ellie's fingers are calloused and she is covered with blood. She sports a new tattoo on her right forearm. She then forces her hands to stop shaking before she strums a few chords on an old acoustic guitar.
“I walk through the valley of the shadow of death. And I fear no evil, because I’m blind to it all,” she sings. “And my mind, my gun -- they comfort me. Because I know I'll kill my enemies when they come. Surely, goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life. And I will dwell on this Earth forevermore. Said I walk beside the still waters and they restore my soul, but I can’t walk on the path of the right, because I’m wrong. No, I can’t walk on the path of the right, because I’m wrong.”
It is during Ellie’s chilling song that Joel walks up to her and passes by a dead body on the bathroom floor. “What are you doing, Kiddo?” he asks Ellie. “You’re really gonna go through with this?”
“I’m gonna find and I’m gonna kill every last one of them,” she answers before the screen fades to black.

At PSX, director Neil Druckmann revealed that Ellie would be the protagonist of “The Last Of Us 2,” so Joel is likely to take the backseat in the story. Druckmann also confirmed that, unlike the original story which was about love, the upcoming title would focus on hate. Ellie, who is 19 years old in the sequel, has lived a hard life and has seen unfathomable things come to life. Who she wants revenge against, however, remains a mystery.
“All I ask is that fans of the first one put some faith in us,” Druckmann said. “Trust we’re going to do right by them.”
There has been no official announcement regarding the actual release date of "The Last Of Us 2."
