Let It Snow: 'Glee: The Music, The Christmas Album, Volume 2' Hits Shelves
Ready for another serving of Glee-ful holiday tunes?
Now on its third season, the hit FOX series continues its blunt TV-music cross-marketing and still gets away with it, the latest of which is the holiday collection 'Glee: The Music, The Christmas Album, Volume 2'.
Naturally, we are to expect a slew of fair covers from the show's lead characters.
The girls seemingly set the festive mood of the album: Amber Riley (Mercedes), with a beat-heavy rendition of Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You', Naya Rivera, who sings in character as Santana in the seductive 'Santa Baby', and Heather Morris (Brittany), with 'Christmas Wrapping' that harkens back to the new-wave era.
Lea Michele (Rachel) and Kevin McHale (Artie), on the other hand, abide by Glee's play book and deliver faithful versions of Joni Mitchell's 'River' and the holiday staple 'Little Drummer Boy', respectively.
And of course, a standard Glee compilation wouldn't be complete without a few duets. However, there isn't a Rachel-Finn duet in sight, which sets the stage for others.
Matthew Morrison (Will) and Jayma Mays (Emma) get mushy with 'Christmas Eve With You', while Michele tries her luck with poster boy Darren Criss (Blaine) on 'Extraordinary Merry Christmas'. Both songs are touted as the disc's original tracks.
Hoping to sustain their popularity as the show's only and favorite gay couple, Criss and Chris Colfer (Kurt) serenade each other with a fuzzy treatment of 'Let It Snow'.
Not to be left out are the recent winners of The Glee Project. Damian McGinty (Rory) is provided his own solo in 'Blue Christmas', while Samuel Larsen joins Mark Salling (Puck) and Cory Monteith (Finn) in a rocked-out 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town'. Fellow contestants Lindsay Pierce and Alex Newell don their angel wings on a solemn-sounding 'Do You Hear What I Hear?'.
Finally, the whole cast gathers for an uplifting edition of 1984's charity single 'Do They Know Its Christmas?', which rounds out the collection.
Early reviews for the album are average, but it "doesn't quite measure up" to the first volume, which was released last year.
'Glee: The Music, The Christmas Album, Volume 2' is only one of the many high-profile holiday albums released this year, a list includes Justin Bieber's 'Under The Mistletoe' and Michael Buble's 'Christmas'.
Better get those hot cocos and headphones in place.
