Lorde has quite a following in her native New Zealand already, but for her, it was still “humbling” to play in front of 10,000 people at the Splendour in the Grass festival in Australia on Sunday. The Auckland teen got a lucky break when she was asked to replace American singer Frank Ocean, who pulled out of the line-up at the last minute.

“Something absurd and cool just came up which involves me getting on a plane in about 24 hours,” she tweeted, adding, “See you at splendour b*tches.”

Sixteen-year-old Ella Yelick-O’Connor was asked by the festival’s promoters to step in for Ocean after he sustained vocal cord injuries. She played at the main stage at 5:30 pm.

“such kind words and happy vibes here tonight. thankyou for having me, splendour. loved every minute,” Lorde wrote after she played her set.

“i dunno how musicians can ever get over looking out onstage and just seeing oceans of people. so humbling always.”

Lorde’s “Royals” hit No 1 in New Zealand, and has been certified double platinum. It also peaked at No 3 on the Aria Chart in Australia, and at 63 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The song described the glamorous lifestyle of the rich and famous as Lorde and her friends live the opposite reality.

Explaining how she got the idea for the song, the young songstress said that she listened to a lot of celebrities who always show off their wealth.

“What really got me is this ridiculous, unrelatable, unattainable opulence that runs throughout. Lana Del Rey is always singing about being in the Hamptons or driving her Bugatti Veyron or whatever, and at the time, me and my friends were at some house party worrying how to get home because we couldn’t afford a cab.

“This is our reality.”

Meanwhile, Ocean has cancelled all of his Australian shows. The 25-year-old “Thinkin Bout You” hitmaker was “noticeably off-key” during his performance at Melbourne’s Festival Hall, which prompted him to seek out medical advice immediately. He found out that he had suffered “a small tear to one of his vocal cords,” and was therefore told to rest.

“Due to Frank Ocean’s tight tour schedule it is not possible to schedule replacement dates, however we will be working to confirm a return to Australia as soon as is practical,” LiveNation released a statement.

All tickets to his Australian shows will be refunded in full.
