Lorde Signs $2.5M Publishing Deal
Lorde can now afford diamonds on a timepiece. The “Royals” singer, who still dominates the U.S. charts even after six weeks, has signed a deal with Songs Music Publishing that is reportedly worth USD2.5 million.
Billboard reports that the 17-year-old New Zealand prodigy has scored the lucrative deal after a months-long bidding war from several publishers for the rights to her catalogue. Among the contenders include Sony/ATV, Universal Music Publishing Group, Kobalt, and Spirit.
But as it happened, it was Songs Music Publishing that won the bidding war.
Songs founder/CEO Matt Pincus said that it was the company’s president and head of A&R Ron Perry who tirelessly pursued Lorde and her managers to seal the deal.
“She could have signed anywhere she wanted to sign, and I don’t know what other people were offering, but as we often say – music publishing is about relationships and it’s about people,” he was quoted by Billboard as saying.
“Ron really connected with Ella [Yelich-O’Connor, Lorde’s real name] and vice versa, and it’s really a tremendous opportunity for us. I’m incredibly proud to be Ella’s publisher – we think she’s a once-in-a-generation type artist.”
The deal was officially signed on November 7, the day Lorde turned 17.
Meanwhile, Lorde was seen grabbing lunch with another young chart-topper, Taylor Swift. A fan has snapped a photo of the two on Monday at the Shake Shack in New York City.

The two appeared to be friendly, which perhaps surprised a lot of people since Taylor’s BFF Selena Gomez has recently dissed Lorde after the latter expressed her unflattering comment on Selena’s song.
Lorde was also called out by Taylor’s fans when she said Taylor was “unattainable” in one of her interviews. She has apologised, though, saying she regretted naming the 23-year-old star, and Taylor appeared not to take offence with younger singer. Judging by the photo, Taylor also didn’t care if she’s friends with people whom Selena didn’t like.
