Selena Gomez still hasn’t recovered from rising star Lorde’s alleged diss. The 21-year-old singer/actress said she will stop covering the younger Kiwi singer’s songs after the latter stood by her earlier criticism of Selena’s song. Lorde doesn’t have to worry too much, though. She has music icon Cher’s back.

The former Disney star and the Billboard chart topper’s so-called war started when Lorde has expressed her not-so-flattering opinion of Selena’s hit “Come & Get It.”

Lorde, who has just turned 17 on Thursday, had a problem with Selena’s song, telling Rolling Stone in a previous interview, “I love pop music on a sonic level. But I’m a feminist, and the theme of her song ‘Come & Get It’ is, ‘When you’re ready, come and get it from me.’ I’m sick of women being portrayed this way.”

Upon learning of the diss, Selena has unleashed some strong words against the other performer, telling radio station Hot 99.5 in an interview that while Lorde is “super talented,” she has her sense of feminism all wrong.

“There’s two different kinds of criticism. There’s the people that hide behind a computer and wat to say endless amount of things but never say it to your face, and then obviously there are the vocal ones. I appreciate everybody’s opinion, especially because I’ve covered her music lots of times.

“I think she is super talented and I think it’s awesome. But I think at the same time that feminism and that specific thing is very sensitive because in my opinion it’s not feminism if you’re tearing down another artist.”

It’s not just Selena that Lorde has targeted in the past. She also has been quoted to express her unfavourable opinions on other artists, such as Selena’s ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber and BFF Taylor Swift. Because of that, Lorde has been getting the reputation of a hater, a label that she doesn’t see is fitting.

“I think there’s a funny culture in music that’s only happened over the last 15 years, that if you have an opinion about something in music that isn’t 100 per cent good, you’re a ‘hater,’ even if you have perfectly reasonable grounds for that critique,” she told MTV.

“People will say exactly what they think about a movie or a TV show, and that’s fine, but as soon as you say it about a record, you’re like some little zombie in a funny dungeon.”

She added, “I have pretty strong morals and opinions being in pop music, and I can’t help but express those, which I think people appreciate. I mean, I don’t think I say anything that isn’t backed up. Most of the time I will stand by thing that I’ve said.”

Lorde has regretted a few things that she has said, particularly about naming Taylor Swift as an example. She has called the Grammy Award winner “flawless” and “attainable” in an interview with Metro magazine.

She has since apologised on her Tumblr page, saying, “I think I cocked that up a bit and what I said wasn’t put in context also,” adding that Taylor was the first person she thought of when she had to name someone so beautiful that other girls feel inadequate.

“[She] was the first person I thought of, which I regret. She happens to be good looking, but I think she actually uses her other imperfections in an incredibly powerful and relatable way.”

But while her issue with Taylor has been cleared, it’s appears that she isn’t backing out with what she said about Selena’s song. So when her name was mentioned while Selena was being interviewed by Flaunt magazine, Selena just shrugged “good-naturedly.”

“That’s not feminism. [Lorde is] not supporting other women. That’s my honest opinion, that’s what I would say to her if I saw her,” she insisted.

“I actually covered her song in all of my shows that I’ve done so far. I’m not sure if I’m going to continue to do that.”

Lorde might have earned an enemy of Selena and her barrage of fans, but she has Cher’s admiration.

“I’m very intrigued my Lorde! So unique! Isn’t it great to discover a new young amazing artist,” the 67-year-old Goddess of Pop tweeted.

“SOAR LITTLE WOMAN.... THIS IS YOUR TIME”

When a follower pointed out that Lorde keeps dissing female pop stars, Cher responded, “ROYALS Doesn’t justStart, It CRACKS OPEN She’s Not a ‘Make Nice’ Artist! She’s looking 2 point out the bullshit,& Tell Her Truth.”
