Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O'Connor, popularly known as Lorde is just 17-years-old and already has four Grammy nominations in her kitty. The New Zealand born singer's song "Royals" has been nominated for the Song of the Year category. She is pitched against Katy Perry and other popular artists. "Royals" reached top position on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2013, making Lorde the first New Zealand solo artist to have a number one song in the United States. Check out her song below. "Royals" is pitched against "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk and Pharrell, "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons, "Locked Out of Heaven" by Bruno Mars and "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke ft. T.I. and Pharrell for Record of the Year category.

The slow number by Lorde also competes with "Just Give Me a Reason" by Pink ft. Nate Ruess, "Locked Out of Heaven" by Bruno Mars, "Roar" by Katy Perry and "Same Love" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft. Mary Lambert for Song of the Year category.

Lorde sure faces tough competition to win a Grammy Award. "Royals" is a song from Lorde's debut studio album "Pure Heroine," which has also been nominated for Best Pop Vocal album for this year's Grammy Awards. The song has been watched extensively on Vevo and was reportedly written by Lorde and Joel Little in half an hour! Critics also slammed the song for being too racist.

Lorde released two music videos for "Royals" both of which were directed by Joel Kefali. One version is an international one while the other is exclusively made for the United States. Both music videos feature Lorde's schoolmates in slow motion.

You would be surprised if we tell you the inspiration behind the song. It is none other than Kansas City Royals' baseball legend George Brett, whose picture Lorde saw at National Geographic when she wrote the song."It was just that word.
