A man in Oklahoma has been fatally shot after striking a deputy with his car while trying to drive away following a chase in Pushmataha County.

Deputies pulled over a man at a traffic stop west of Antlers at 2:44 a.m. Sunday. The man was reportedly accompanied by a female passenger. But instead of cooperating, the man drove away.

"The suspect drove away from the traffic stop and deputies pursued for several miles on rural Pushmataha County roads," Pushmataha County Sheriff B J Hedgecock wrote in a Facebook post.

After the chase in rural southeastern Oklahoma, the driver eventually stopped the vehicle. He was then approached by the deputies. However, while being removed from the car, the man tried to drive away again.

While trying to escape, he hit an officer with his vehicle, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) said.

A second deputy then shot the man and he reportedly died at the scene, the OSBI said further.

The deputy who was struck by the vehicle was taken to the hospital where he is currently receiving medical attention for a non-life-threatening injury.

The OSBI is still investigating the incident. The name of the man who was killed will be released after his family is notified, AP News said in a report.

Earlier this month, a Louisiana man who had been accused of shooting his girlfriend and her nephew was fatally shot during a police chase. Eric Derell Smith, 30, reportedly shot his 32-year-old girlfriend Christin Parker and her 26-year-old nephew Brandon Parker after entering a residence located along Richmond Street. He then took a 4-month-old baby, who is his son with Christin, when he fled the scene. Cops pursued Smith down the Interstate 10 in Harrison County, Mississippi. He was eventually killed after a gun battle with authorities.
