'Marvel's The Defenders' debuts on the San Diego Comic Con 2016 Netflix panel; features Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage [Watch Trailer]
“Marvel’s The Defenders” is set to launch sometime in 2017 on Netflix
“Marvel’s The Defenders” was present at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con. The upcoming Netflix original show featured new footage with several familiar characters like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage.
The Verge notes that the footage lasted under one minute. The clip featured the song “Come As Your Are” by Nirvana as sheets of newspaper and magazine pages were torn and peeled back to reveal some hints about the upcoming cast of characters like Daredevil, Danny Rand a.k.a. Iron Fist and the group name.
A voiceover, apparently by the new big baddie, followed and asked, “You think the four of you can save New York? You can’t even save yourselves.”
The clip did not provide a lot of information about the storyline, although it is certain to be set in New York City. All the four heroes are known to be based in the Big Apple, but they are expected to face a more deadly type of threat since they are compelled to join forces. The plot will most likely relate to the Chaste, the holy order of Stick, Daredevil’s mentor, who aims to protect the whole world from darkness.
Cinema Blend writes that Marvel fans will certainly be excited to see a new group of superheroes aside from the Avengers. However, the upcoming Defenders will consist of street-level heroes instead of the usual more powerful bunch to stay consistent with where the Marvel Cinematic Universe is headed. The original Defenders comprised of Doctor Strange, Namor the Sub-Mariner and The Hulk, with Valkyrie and Silver Surfer joining later.
Joe Quesada, Chief Creative Officer of Marvel, told IGN that the adjustments in the Defender’s roster for TV did not pose a lot of issues, considering how they were not as popular as other Marvel groups. Quesada explained that most viewers around the world are still unaware of the composition of The Defenders. It feels very natural to introduce the name and concept to viewers and they have a wonderful concept on why the group is called as such and why they exist in this particular world.
“Marvel’s The Defenders” is set to launch sometime in 2017 on Netflix. More updates and details are expected soon.
