Microsoft To Phase Out Windows Phone Brand And Upgrade All Lumia Windows Phone 8 And 8.1 Devices To Windows 10 In Future
Microsoft is going to unify the Windows OS for desktops and laptops with the Windows Phone OS designed for smartphones and tablets into a single OS which will be rolled out as Windows 10. Even though Windows 10 is going to arrive by the middle or late 2015, Microsoft has confirmed that that all the Lumia devices that running on Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 will be upgraded to Windows 10.
The official Twitter account of Lumia has a tweet that reads that the Windows 10 upgrades will be made available to all the Lumia devices with Windows Phone 8 or higher. Microsoft has revealed quite a lot about the expected feature for PC edition of Windows 10, but has spoken anything constructive about the smartphone edition of the OS.
Neowin has highlighted that the official tweet does not mentioned the next Lumia software major upgrade as 'Windows 10' and not as 'Windows Phone 10' which is a clear indication that Microsoft is in the process of phasing out Windows Phone in a bid to way to launch a single platform called Windows 10 for all its devices including wearables.
Windows Central cautions its readers by stating that the Twitter account of Microsoft should not be considered as a press channel even though it is an official account of the company. As of now, it is too early to predict the timeframes as to when the Windows 10 will hit the Lumia devices.
On November 12, we had reported that Microsoft is working on a new Lumia 940 smartphone that is being speculated to be one of the first handsets to come preloaded with Windows 10 OS. PhoneArena claims that even though there are speculations about the Lumia 940, its existence cannot be confirmed.
One of the promotional pictures placed on PhoneArena's post Windows 10 upgrade for existing Lumia Windows 8 devices reads 'One product family', 'One platform' and 'One store' which shows that in future all the Microsoft devices in 2015 will run on Windows 10 OS. Even it is the very same OS, it will appear slightly unique on different devices from Microsoft.
