Let us have a look at the dance type Singkíl:
Singkíl is a well-known dance of the Maranao people of Lake Lanao. The Singkíl originated from the Maranao people who reside in the shores of Lake Lanao. It is derived from a story in the Darangen, the Maranao version of the popular and sacred ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana. The name of the dance itself means "to entangle the feet with disturbing objects such as vines or anything in your path".
During celebrations and other festive amusement well-liked dance is performed. Initially only women, particularly royalty, danced the Singkíl, which serves as either a cognisant or cataleptic advert to impending suitors.
The lead dancer, in the role of Putri Gandingan (the Darangen name for Sita), courteously step in and out of closing bamboos poles arranged in either a parallel, rectangular, or criss-cross manner while using either apir (fans), mosala (scarves), or even just their bare hands. A kulintang and agung ensemble is worn during the dance.
The Singkíl is secular in nature, performed by the Ummah communities of the Maranao and Maguindanao but often speciously referred to by non-Maranaos as a "Muslim dance", Initially, the dance was performed with just one pair of bamboo poles, in due course adopting the use of two criss-crossing pairs.
This dance type was popularised by the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company.
