'Modern Family' Season 7, Episode 3 full recap: The Closet Case
In this week’s episode of “Modern Family,” parenting skills are put to the test as several characters deal with their kids’ issues. Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill) has a problem with his son, Mitchell’s new boss, while Phil and Claire Dunphy figure out how to deal with their daughter’s boyfriend. Elsewhere, Gloria and Cam figure out how to help Manny have an easier time in high school.
Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet) have been struggling with their finances since Mitch lost his job at a law firm. He gets offered a job to handle a case for his father’s rival and takes the case even if Jay is completely enraged by the idea.
When Mitch starts working for Closets, Closets, Closets, Closets!, he meets his father’s rival. Earl puts on a fake persona and fools Mitch into thinking that he’s a good guy. Mitch tries to defend Earl but he doesn’t know that Earl has sinister plans. He pranks Jay by decorating a truck with a photo of himself with Mitch and the caption "Jay Pritchett, even your son hates you.”
Mitch freaks out and apologises to his dad. They both attempt to prank Earl back, but he catches them. When the two older men get into a scuffle, Mitch steals back the rolodex that Earl stole from Jay years ago. The rolodex is full of their business contacts , from when they first started a closet company. Mitch and Jay bond over the incident and both agree to never take sides outside of the family.
At the Dunphy household, Haley (Sarah Hyland) is back with Dylan and she wants Phil (Ty Burrell) to help her ask Claire (Julie Bowen) if Dylan can move in with her in the basement. Phil is always trying to be the cool parent and agrees. Claire does not like the whole idea and doesn’t like how Phil is making her out to be the bad cop.
With a little prodding from Claire, Phil comes around and sees how uncomfortable he is on seeing his daughter getting intimate with her boyfriend right under his roof. When he finally breaks, he tells Dylan to stay in Alex’s room instead of in the basement with Haley. Claire is unable to contain her frustration and eventually just blurts out that she is not ok with the living arrangements and she wants Dylan to move out.
Meanwhile, Gloria (Sofia Vergara) is concerned about her son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez). He is in the school’s football team, and the cheerleader that’s been assigned to decorate his locker isn’t doing her job. Gloria knows that Manny is sensitive and she tries to threaten the cheerleader. Cam, the football coach, stops her in her tracks.
She decides to decorate the locker herself but she sees that it has already been decorated. It turns out, Cam saw a tragic parenting documentary and decided to decorate the locker himself. While all this is going on, Manny is busy making out with girls whom he met on a visit to Alex’s college dorm.
