More Ancient Mummies Discovered in Peru
Peru archaeologists discovered a couple of mummies that are over 1,000 years old. They found those in one of the Lima suburbs.
The mummies found are of a child and an adult. It is believed that the child was offered to the gods as an offering. The child might have been buried while it was alive. It might have taken place after the death of the adult. The mummies are in squatting positions. They are completely dressed however wrapped in rope. They were found near an ancient complex where religious ceremonies were being held. The complex has been being excavated for the last 32 years.
In addition to the couple of human mummies, researchers managed to find other religious offering in the place. Those ancient offerings include guinea pig remains and some other feline designed jars.
Researcher Gladys Paz was talking to the AFP. He said that the discovery happened to be one of the most significant ones in the last 32 years of excavation. The significance lies more in the fact that the mummies which are discovered have turned out to be intact.
These mummies happen to be the third instalment of unbroken mummies while over seventy tombs have already been discovered in the Huaca Pucllana tomb. This is a temple which looks like a pyramid. It was built during the pre-Columbian reign of Wari Empire that rules the Andes between 100AD and 600AD. The Inca civilisation took place right after that. The temple is now situated in the Miraflores neighbourhood.
Earlier in June 2013, archaeologists in the country discovered one royal tomb which had treasures along with it. In addition to the royal mummy, other mummified women were also found there. Those mummies are believed to have dated about 1,200 years back. The discovery took place in the northern part of the capital of the country, exactly the same place where the other two mummies were found.
The remains of four children and a woman were found in 2010 while the remains of a teenage girl were found in 2008. Only about 40 per cent of the site has been excavated so far.
