‘Mortal Kombat X’ Official Launch Trailer, Goro Trailers And Fatalities Revealed; Netcode To Be Greatly Improved
After months of teasing, drip-fed character reveals and story hints, NetherRealm has finally blown the doors off its plans for “Mortal Kombat.” A set of new trailers details the game’s story and shows Goro in action, while the developer promises it has greatly improved its online netcode for this latest entry in the series.
The two-minute official trailer can be found on the “Mortal Kombat” Community YouTube page and is set to the rhythm of System of a Down's “Chop Suey.” The band’s bassist, Shavo Odadjian, has been working with NetherRealm on the trailer for a while now, and a new behind-the-scenes video showing how the video game came together has also been made available.
The video itself shows the armies of Outworld engaged in war, hints at the story and offers up a healthy serving of brutal one-on-one combat. Spotted amidst the carnage, fans will be excited to see a few quick shots of the legendary Shokan warrior Goro pounding Johnny Cage into the earth.
Gamers finally get a glimpse of Goro’s combat via a brief one-minute trailer on the “MK” Community YouTube page, which shows him punch-walking, fire-breathing and beating enemies into submission with pure brute strength. The video ends with Goro crushing Johnny Cage’s skull into his torso, exacting long-awaited revenge after the events of the 1995 movie. A second, even more brutal fatality can be seen in full, thanks to another video via the GamesMedia HQ YouTube channel. Goro will be added as a DLC character, though no release date has been given.
Between the new trailers that show off new characters, reveal fighting variations and fatalities, it’s not unreasonable to ask if “Mortal Kombat X” is crossing the line with its depictions of violence. Speaking with Polygon, lead game designer John Edwards argues that while graphic, the game’s violence skews more tongue-in-cheek than gritty and hardcore.
“But then you laugh about it after, because it’s so ridiculous, I mean, pulling the guy’s organs out? That’s not something that’s realistic violence, right? It looks realistic, just graphically because of the power of the new consoles, but it’s still very tongue in cheek and kind of fantastical,” he said.
Speaking with YouTuber Angry Joe, “Mortal Kombat” co-creator Ed Boon also promised that the game would feature enhanced netcode over its predecessor, ensuring smoother, more reliable online sessions. “Mortal Kombat X” will be released on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on April 14. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions have been delayed to an unannounced date in the summer.
