Mutant Cane Toads Invade Oz Territory
Disturbing news from the Northern Territories: five-legged mutant cane toads.
A Virginia resident last week sent in proof of the this next step in the evolution of the cane toad- five legs. Five legged cane toads have been discovered before most notably back in 2007 with a five legged frog by the name of Jake the Peg in Tumbling Waters near Darwin River.
Five legs are the latest evolutionary development of this dangerous toad. Researchers have reported that cane toads were hopping faster than their predecessors, hopping 2km in a single night. Evolution is apparently preparing toads to be faster and bigger with five legs.
Cane toads are already a big pest without these natural enhancement. Released into the wild to protect sugar canes against pests, these toads have edged out other amphibians to leap to the top of the food chain. And since these toads are poisonous they have no predators to curb their increasing population.
This hardy toad has already established itself in Queensland and the Northern Territory and in New South Walks with individual toads hopping their way into Sydney. Scientists haven't looked into this five legged mutation yet. Paranoid individuals should now lock their doors against this mutated menace.
