Natalie Portman will play another ‘Jane,’ however, this time she’s not a scientist but a badass gun-slinging character in “Jane Got a Gun.”

According to the film’s official synopsis, Portman plays the role of Jane Hammond, the wife of a wounded outlaw who has a bounty on his head. Noah Emmerich plays Bill Hammond, Jane’s husband who is wounded in a gunfight by a gang of bandits who call themselves Bishop Boys Gang. When her husband falls ill, Jane will take it upon herself to protect her husband and child with the help of her ex-lover, Dan Frost, played by Joel Edgerton.

The teaser for the film reads, “Jane’s past meets the present in a heart-stopping battle for survival.”

Ewan McGregor has signed on to play the antagonist in the film, John Bishop, the leader of the Bishop Boys Gang.

The trailer shows Jane’s transition from a plain housewife to gun wielding, tough-as-nails woman who will do everything to protect her family.

An indie-western film with a female lead is rare and despite the setbacks suffered by the film in its production, the trailer looks promising and could very well become a surprise box-office hit.

Before “Jane Got a Gun” fell into the laps of director Gavin O’Connor, the film was supposed to be directed by Lynne Ramsay, who dropped out at the very last second that led to a bunch of casting shake-ups.

Originally, Jude Law, Michael Fassbender and Bradley Cooper were set to star in the film but the delay caused scheduling conflicts with their other projects so the three bowed out. As if the casting shuffle is not enough, its original distributor, Relativity Media shelved the film last August because of financial constraints.

Fortunately, The Weinstein Company came in to save the project by acquiring the rights to “Jane Got a Gun.”

“Jane Got a Gun” will be released on Nov. 25 in Europe and February 2016 in the U.S.
