NBA News: Paul Pierce to retire if Los Angeles Clippers win NBA title
Veteran Paul Pierce is willing to walk away from the game if his new team, the Los Angeles Lakers go all the way to the title in the 2015-2016 NBA season.
"If we win this year -- win a championship -- I'll probably be done with basketball, just to be honest," Pierce during the Clippers’ media day via ESPN. "It would be a dream -- to be home, to be able to carry the championship trophy down Manchester Boulevard -- it would be a dream come true. I'm excited for this moment."
Pierce, who joined the Clippers in the recent offseason to reunite with former head coach Doc Rivers, looks to help the L.A. squad win an NBA championship with his veteran leadership and presence.
The 37-year-old Pierce signed a three-year deal worth $10.58 million (AU$ 15.06 million) earlier this year to join his fourth NBA franchise. Before landing in Hollywood, Pierce played for the Washington Wizards in 2014-2015, Brooklyn Nets in 2013-2014 and the Boston Celtics from 1999 to 2013. Pierce and Rivers won the NBA title in Boston in 2008 when they beat the Los Angeles Lakers and Pierce was named the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player in the championship round.
The Clippers have been one of the top contenders from the Western Conference in the last few seasons but have not been able go reach the NBA Finals. For the upcoming NBA season, the presence of Pierce will add another veteran to the line-up, which already has established NBA players in Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. In the 2015 offseason, the Clippers also added veterans Josh Smith, Lance Stephenson, Wesley Johnson and Pablo Prigioni.
Pierce averaged 11.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 73 regular season games and 14.6 points and 4.2 rebounds in 10 postseason games in the 2015-2016 season for the Washington Wizards.
