Nest releases new specialised outdoor security cam that can watch and listen on suspicious activities

Nest has announced the outdoor version of its Nest Cam series . The security camera’s 1080 resolution video capture and 130-degree wide angle lens make spotting and identifying would-be thieves very easy. At a glance, the outdoor version is less sleek than its indoor counter part. It also looks more like a security camera, which was intended to deter criminals.

The Nest Cam Outdoor’s night vision feature is powered by eight high powered infrared LEDs. This feature illuminates the darkest scenes and enables the owner to see up to 20 feet. The range of visibility is increased even further with the help of light sources.

The product was designed to be outdoor proof with its white colour to resist overheating. The weatherproof case protects the camera from wind and water. The security cam also comes with a 10-foot cable and a 15-foot AC adapter cable.

Nest Cam Outoor uses a magnetic mount to let owners position the cameras to any available metallic surface, making installation straightforward. On the other hand, this means that the camera mount is limited only to metallic surfices. The mount design, however, makes the the Nest Cam Outdoor undesirable for flat surfices

The camera’s inner mechanisms are also purposed for outdoor use. The speakers are located at the bottom to minimise the need to add extra layers for waterproofing. This consideration enabled the camera to deliver quality audio without the offset.

The WiFi reach was also ensured to achieve maximum range by improving on the previous model’s antennae design.

The software and app that comes with the camera is said to be the deal breaker. Nest Cam Outdoor is equipped with Nest Aware, a program that enables the camera to detect movement and sound that matters. The program can detect whether the movement comes from an object or a person of interest and pairs it with the ability to listen for conspicuous sounds.

Nest Cam Outdoor is strictly a survailance and deterrent only security camera. It has no built in alarm and the owner can shout at the traspasser through the mic at best. The camera can be dismounted rather easily from the magnetic mount as well if positioned in a reachable spot.

Currently Nest Cam Outdoor is only available for pre-order in the United States and Canada at their website and Best Buy for US$199 (AU$260).
