Eric Mangini has been be hired by the San Francisco 49ers as defensive coordinator giveng him a three-year contract and promoted after being the team’s special assistant over the last years. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was one of the first to report the update on Twitter

Mangini started his coaching career in the National Football League (NFL) with the Baltimore Ravens in 1996 and then became the defensive assistant with the New York Jets from 1997 to 1999. He was also part of the New England Patriots as a defensive back coach (2000 to 2004) and defensive coordinator (2005).

Mangini became the head coach for the Jets from 2006 to 2008 and the Cleveland Browns from 2009 to 2010. With San Francisco he had the role of tight ends coach before moving up next season. Mangini also talked to other NFL teams including the Oakland Raiders and Washington Redskins for other job openings but couldn’t agree on any deals. At 35 years old then, he became the youngest coach in league history on Jan. 17, 2006 when the Jets hired him to lead their team. Mangini had an underwhelming performance in New York with only a 23-25 record in three seasons and only one playoff appearance where they lost to the Patriots in a wild card game.

Mangini’s Browns’ coaching stint was as underwhelming going just 10-22 in two seasons and he has a career 33-48 record as head coach. Mangini, who replaced Vic Fangio, will work with new head coach Jim Tomsula, who replaced Jim Harbaugh, in the upcoming NFL season. The 49ers missed the playoffs this year.
