A few days after stating in interviews that he wants to play for a Super Bowl contender while being a primary option at running back, Frank Gore is now in talks with the San Francisco 49ers for a possible return and contract extension in the National Football League, or NFL.

The latest out of the Gore and 49ers camp is that both sides are engaged in contract discussions with Gore being represented by his agent, Drew Rosenhaus in the negotiations, according to a report from ESPN.com’s Ed Werder. Gore will hit free agency for the first time in his career on March 10, 2015 after spending his first ten seasons in San Francisco.

With the 49ers, which picked him in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft, Gore became the franchise’s all-time leader in rushing yards with 11,073 for his career. Gore is a five time Pro Bowler making the elite team in 2006, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

“I know the fans love me,” The 31 year old Gore said on social media last Sunday before the sides eventually talked about contract discussions. “But I need to know if the management does but I’m going to love my fans no matter what.”

Gore’s post fuelled speculations that the 49ers do not want him back with the team. However, the recent report should suggest that the 49ers are considering of bringing him back at least for next season. San Francisco fired Jim Harbaugh as head coach of the team early in the offseason and named Jim Tomsula as replacement. The change will most likely mean a new offensive scheme and it remains to be seen how Gore will adjust to Tomsula or how the new coach will use Gore as running back in the new offence.

Gore played in all 16 regular season games last season finishing with 1,106 rushing yards on 255 carries with four touchdowns. San Francisco missed the NFL postseason going just 8-8 in the regular season.
