The fans as well as the cast members of “The Vampire Diaries,” or “TVD,” said goodbye to lead female character Elena Gilbert, played by Nina Dobrev, in the finale of the CW TV series’ sixth season. Fortunately, Elena’s storyline in “The Vampire Diaries” Season 6 finale suggests that Dobrev could return. “The Vampire Diaries” Season 7 will premiere on Thursday night, Oct. 8, at 8/7c on the CW Network. [Spoiler Alert!]

In the "TVD" Season 6 finale episode, villain Kai Parker, played by Chris Wood, had linked Elena’s life to her best friend Bonnie Bennett, played by Kat Graham, through a witch spell. According to Kai, Elena will remain asleep as long as Bonnie is alive.

Dobrev may have left the show, but the CW Network is still hoping that she will still come back to reprise her role. CW president Mark Pedowitz told the reporters at the 2015 Television Critics Association, or TCA, panel on Tuesday that the network would love to have Dobrev return to TVD, according to a report from People.

“She did a great job for the six years she was on the show. She is welcome any time she wants to come back,” Pedowitz said in the People report. Meanwhile, the CW president revealed that the creative team will be refocusing the show following Dobrev’s exit.

Pedowitz teased that “The Vampire Diaries” Season 7 will focus on the relationship between the Salvatore brothers. As for the female "TVD" characters, Pedowitz further teased that Bonnie Bennett and Caroline Forbes, played by Candice Accola, will step up in the show in ways that the CW Network are very happy with.

Series creator Julie Plec teased in an interview with TVLine at the 2015 TCA summer press tour that Damon Salvatore, played by Ian Somerhalder, will be struggling on what to do with himself and how to behave while Elena is in a slumber spell in “The Vampire Diaries” Season 7. As for Damon’s coping method, Plec further teased that Damon will be back on the bourbon wagon with best friend Alaric Saltzman, played by Matt Davis.
