No Deal Extension Yet For Oklahoma City Thunder’s Reggie Jackson, Promising Player To Hit Free Agency In 2015
As the dealing for contract extensions near, it looks like the Oklahoma City Thunder and Reggie Jackson are far apart on probable contract extensions and that the OKC franchise will prefer to allow the combo guard to hit restricted free agency (RFA) status after the 2014-2015 NBA Season.
The non-deal was reported via newsok.com, which is an Oklahoma City-based website. It stated that a deal between the promising guard and the Thunder “appears unlikely to get done” before the Oct. 31 deadline for probable contract extensions and that “talks will have to resume next summer,” which will allow Jackson to hit free agency.
As a RFA, Jackson has the option to sign with any other NBA team but the Thunder will have the rights of first refusal, which means that they can match the contract and retain Jackson’s services.
Other Players From 2011 NBA Draft Who Got A Contract Extension This Offseason
Jackson was drafted 24th overall by the OKC Thunder in the 2011 NBA Draft. Here are some of Jackson’s batchmates who already signed a contract extension with their respective ball clubs:
Player Name (Team, Draft Pick) - Contract Extension
Kemba Walker (Charlotte Hornets, 9th pick) - 4-year $48M or $12M/season
Marcus Morris (Phoenix Suns, 14th pick) - 4-year $20M or $5M/season
Markieff Morris (Phoenix Suns, 13th pick) - 4-year $32M or $8M/season
Nikola Vučević (Orlando Magic, 16th pick) - 4-year $54M or $13.5M/season
Kenneth Faried (Denver Nuggets, 22nd pick) 4-year $50M or 12.5M/season
Jackson has shown the potential to be a starting point guard in the league when OKC starting PG Russell Westbrook went down with an injury in 2012. With Westbrook back in the line-up and looking healthy, Jackson’s role will revert to the back-up guard position.
Jackson started 36 of 80 games played in 2013-2014 averaging 13.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists for OKC in the regular season. In the 2014 NBA Playoffs, his breakout game was a 32-point performance in a Game 4 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in the Western Conference First Round Series.
