"Delta's 19,000 in-flight professionals are there for the safety and comfort of our customers, and equipping them with innovative solutions means they can better meet our customers' needs on board every flight. This is yet another way we're investing in technology to improve the customer experience," Joanne Smith, the Senior Vice President - In-Flight Service, stated.
Delta Airlines looked forward to providing the flight attendants with more "customer-specific information" in order to facilitate "more personalized service." There are expansion plans as well to this solution over the next 3 years to the latest Nokia devices.
The airline company interestingly noted that the Windows Phone 8 handset will function on Wi-Fi and AT&T's 4G LTE network. Microsoft together with Avanade and AT&T developed this airline solution for months after hearing feedbacks from the flight attendants.
Instead of manually jotting down the numerous passenger orders and collecting cash or credit card numbers for payments, the flight attendants will just simply place the orders on the Nokia Lumia 820 handset screen, collect the payment with a quick swipe of the credit or debit card across the attached reader and then email a receipt to the passenger.
The Nokia Lumia 820 Windows Phone 8 device will allow the Delta Airlines flight attendants to provide:
1. Near real-time credit credit card processing of in-flight purchases. It includes the upgrade to Delta Airlines' Economy Comfort seating.
2. Handy eReceipts that customers can receive via emails.
3. Use of a customer's pre-paid credit card for on-board purchases.
4. A faster transaction processing time.
5. The facility to read the customer's coupons shown on their handset (coming soon).
6. A well-organized service improvement.
The Nokia Lumia 820 smartphones will appear next on Delta Connection flights beginning August 26. The Finnish company's device features and specs include a 4.3-inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen display, the Windows Phone 8 operating system that can be upgraded to WP8 Amber update, dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon process, 4G connectivity and the power of a 1650 mAh Li-Ion battery.
