‘The OA’ co-creators reveal why season 1 finale ended with a shooting incident

“The OA” season 1 has ended with a cliffhanger as it was made to appear that Prairie (Brit Marling) was killed by a school shooter. But it is also possible that the lead character, also known as the OA, is not dead and had not been transported to a different dimension. As fans patiently wait for a season 2 to see what really happened to Prairie, show creators Marling and Zal Batmanglij have been teasing fans about what to expect, including how and why they have settled for a shooting incident as the final events of “The OA” season 1.

Batmanglij has revealed that it is actually a topic that they have read about. They are interested about stories of people being held in a basement in captivity, and ponder on how this situation could happen in a world where people live with no captivity.

The co-creator said that was actually the experience of Prairie. She got into something that was horrific and traumatic at the same time. Batmanglij believes the school shooting is a logical version of violence that reflects what is currently happening in the real world.

The story of “The OA” has been meticulously planned. Batmanglij and Marling have spent two or three years creating a whole world before anybody has heard about the idea. Batmanglij admitted that at one point, none of them had thoughts about a sophomore season of the show. That’s because they were all exhausted. Regardless, “The OA” season 2 will definitely push through, but no official air date has been confirmed yet.

Marling, on the other hand, feels confident that the show is worthwhile. “We spent a good year and a half upfront, before we even wrote the first chapter, designing the labyrinth and making sure there was something at its centre that would feel worthwhile to arrive at,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

Even before “The OA” renewal has been officially confirmed by Netflix, the creators already have an idea about where the show would be heading. Marling said they always had an intention for where a second season would start and where it would end. It is significant to know all these things upfront.

“The OA” season 1 was shown in Australia on Netflix. It is expected that a season 2 of the series is set to reveal more about Prairie’s life. Air date for its second season is expected to be announced in the near future.
