Official Android 4.2 Jelly Bean for Sony Xperia Z Soon to be Released? Developers Encouraged to Hack Away [Video]
Android Open Source Project is now open for Sony Xperia Z and developers are encouraged to contribute to the software. The developer community can have fun tweaking on the said AOSP software to hasten the development which may lead to the official Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean firmware for Sony Xperia Z.
Sony GitHub provided the code and all available binaries for Xperia Z, encouraging developers to be familiar with it. It is also the tool used to facilitate and verify contributions to AOSP on the APQ8064 Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro platform. If the progress goes successful, owners of Xperia smartphones running the chipset may soon have Android 4.2 Jelly Bean in AOSP or AOKP variants including Xperia Z.
The software includes functional features such as boot up, SD card slot support, Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth, GPS, LED and most sensors are all working properly. Although this software is not something you should use for everyday use, it a promising beginning for Xperia phones.
Here are some details regarding the AOSP software released by Sony:
1. It is similar to AOSP for Xperia S Project which will be maintained by Johan Redestig and Björn Andersson, senior software engineers at Sony. Developers may get some binaries and use to what the end-user license agreement states.
2. Currently, the software does not support everyday use but there are many things which are already functioning properly. It boots up, SD-card support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, LED light and sensors are working. Camera and modem are running internally but both binaries are not for public access.
3. Be familiar with the codes and binaries and feel free to help on the issues list. All contributions are handled through GitHub tool.
4. Updates are constant and the project is looking forward to replace some binaries which will be provided on the Developer World including binaries for NFC. Developers are sought to engage in the development and contribute on the project.
