'Outlander' Season 2: Jamie and Claire will take time to adapt in France; Diana Gabaldon shares views on casting
Cast members Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe teased some details about what to expect in “Outlander” Season 2, in a new behind the scenes video. Author Diana Gabaldon talked about her writing process and also talked about the complaints she received after casting the two main characters for the show.
A behind the scenes video posted on Entertainment Weekly shows Heughan (Jamie) and Balfe (Claire) in a French set of the show. Heughan said that the next season is a “whole new show” and is split into two halves. The first half will take the two main characters to Paris and Versailles, where they will attend King Louis’ (Lionel Lingelser) court.
Heughan said that it will take the two characters a while to adjust to this new world. Balfe teased that the couple will face “so many obstacles” in France. The main mission of the two characters in the next season is to change the course of history, which needs a lot of “political reading and maneuvering,” Balfe revealed.
The first hurdle that Jamie and Claire will face in “Outlander” Season 2 is to find a way to navigate through the French high society. They also face personal challenges with a baby on the way. The couple will also have to deal with some hang over from the events in the previous season.
Jamie and Claire will come back to Scotland in the later part of the TV series. They will be tasked with saving the Highlander culture and Scotland from the impending battle. The couple will apparently be at the “forefront” of these events.
“Outlander” Season 2 is based on Gabaldon’s book “Dragonfly in Amber.” Addressing fan concerns about Heughan and Balfe not really looking like the characters from the book, the author pointed out that the main task of actors is to act and they only need to match the “rough physical parameters” of the characters from the books. She defended the casting of the two actors and praised them for what they have been able to do on the show.
