'Outlander' season 3: Wil Johnson wraps filming and post production
Wil Johnson has officially completed his acting duties for “Outlander” season 3, the actor announced online. He is playing the role of Dr Joe Abernathy, a new character on the show this year. The character is a part of the flashback scenes with Claire.
For Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) storyline, the show will begin with her in Boston, from the time she just returned from 1740s through the magic stones and moved to the US, along with her first husband Frank (Tobias Menzies). One of the new characters who will be introduced in this timeline is Joe Abernathy (Wil Johnson).
Johnson announced on Twitter that he has finished filming his scenes, and also the post production work. For readers who don’t know what ADR means- it is short for Automated Dialogue Replacement. This is the post production work where actors record their dialogues in the studio for the scenes that have already been filmed. This helps the fans get clear sound, which is not distorted by the sound of wind and other distractions that are common during filming.
There were a lot of congratulatory messages by the fans to Johnson. Many also complimented him, and told him how much he resembles the character from Diana Gabaldon’s book “Voyager.” For his part, the actor teased that “Outlander” season 3 is “looking GOOD.”
According to the official character description of the character, Abernathy is a fellow doctor in training with Claire. The two become friends during their time together at a medical school. He is described as intelligent and charismatic, with a dry sense of humour. Despite his best qualities, he will face challenges due to his race.
Abernathy and Claire both feel like outsiders in the medical school, which is mostly dominated by white men. By working together they develop a life-long friendship.
The Boston scenes for the show have been filmed in Scotland. Filming in the country wrapped recently, and the cast and crew are now heading to South Africa to complete the remaining episodes.
Co-executive Producer Matthew B. Roberts teased pictures of him approaching Cape Town. He took the pictures from the plane, so these are not from the production sets of the show.
The crew is currently working on the sets of the show. The main cast members, including Balfe and Sam Heughan (Jamie), will soon be heading there to start filming their scenes for “Outlander” season 3. The two have already filmed the scene of their departure on the show, and took that opportunity to say goodbye to Scotland, for now.
