Paul Walker rose to celebrity status for his role in the 1999 football drama "Varsity Blues" and the "Fast and Furious" franchise added to his success. But his first love was Marine Biology and he majored in the subject at community college. Beyond the high-octane street-racing films, Walker was spellbound by the ocean. With the keen interest in Marine Biology, Walker 's role model was French oceanographer and conservationist Jacques Cousteau.

Walker intended on pursuing marine biology as a career. "I thought I'd make one movie, pay off my loans, and go back and finish school," "[But] it never stopped. The passion for marine biology is still there. That was my first passion, so I still find other ways to fulfil that," explained Walker at an event.

In 2005, Walker starred in "Into The Blue," the treasure-hunting thriller where he spent most of his time in the water - a matter he found thrilling and fulfilling at the same time.

In 2006, Walker became a board member of the Billfish Foundation. The said foundation monitors fish populations and ocean health around the globe.

in 2010, with a team for National Geographic's series Expedition Great White he spent 11 days off the coast of Mexico catching great white sharks. This was his answer when asked why he was so spellbound by that venture.

"The sea is just a big mystery, really. There are things that are more alien in the ocean than I think are probably alien up in space. It seems like every other day there's a new discovery. You look at it and you're like, 'Really, that's from this planet?' Things that are so bizarre. You know, we're finding creatures living at depths that we thought were completely impossible. They're living by sea vents where the temperature is so hot that we thought it would basically sterilize the water, so to find anything living in those environments is mind-blowing. And if it's not the depths, it's something in the sand, it's a crazy octopus that was never before realized or identified. I like that. As much as we like to think we know, it's just a reminder of how little we actually do."

Walker an athletically built marine biologist-in-the-making, swiftly took to surfing in high school.

"Surfing soothes me. It's always been a kind of Zen experience for me. The ocean is so magnificent, peaceful and awesome. The rest of the world disappears for me when I'm on a wave," said Paul to Dark Horizons in 2001.

In an interview with the telegraph.net, Walker talked about his first love i.e. marine biology along with the most frightening stunt he had to do in his life.

"I think it's what I'm doing now. My first love was marine biology. Jacques Cousteau was my idol. I was always hoping in the back of my mind that there would be a way that somehow things would kind of intersect and that I would be able to have my cake and eat it too. So I've been putting the feelers out there for a long time," said Walker.

"Yeah, but I'm passionate about animals and I hunt too. It's like I save and I kill. I'm a walking, talking contradiction. I'm all about preserving the environment but I'm racing cars on the weekend. I tell everyone I'm gun-loving hippy," further explained Walker. Read the full interview here.
