After the critical success of last year’s “Wolfenstein: The New Order,” game publisher Bethesda Softworks has announced a prequel to last year’s smash hit in “Wolfenstein: The Old Blood.” The game will be a stand-alone expansion, so a copy of “Wolfenstein: The New Order” won’t be needed for players who have yet to experience the alternate timeline where the Nazis won World War II.

Fans of “The New Order,” or any of the previous “Wolfenstein” games, might be happy to hear that lead protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz will be returning in “The Old Blood.” According to a report from IGN, the game’s two-part story will center on a last-ditch effort to stop the Nazi war machine in Bavaria. Given how “Wolfenstein: The New Order” starts, anyone who’s played the game will know that this mission will not be ending well.

This prequel will be split into two parts, the first of which is called "Rudi Jager" and the "Den of Wolves." This part of the story will have B.J. taking on a supposedly maniacal prison warden, possibly Rudy Jager, as he attempts to steal the coordinates to General Deathshead compound in Castle Wolfenstein.

The second part of the game is called The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs. This section of the plot will have Blazcowicz in the city of Wulfburg, where he must stop an obsessed Nazi archaeologist, presumably Helga Von Schabbs, from harnessing the ancient dark power of these mysterious artifacts.

Bethesda has released a trailer for the upcoming “Wolfenstein” expansion and it is filled with a good number of new elements that were not in the original release of “The New Order.” There will be some new environments for the player to explore, new enemies to tussle with and new weapons to take down those new enemies and blow them to smithereens.

“Wolfenstein: The Old Blood” will be available on May 5 for $19.99 and will be coming out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Polygon states that “The Old Blood” may not be coming to last-gen consoles, despite “The New Order” coming out for PS3 and Xbox 360.
