Princess Diana deeply hurt by rumours Prince Charles was not Prince Harry’s father
Princess Diana was hurt by the rumours claiming Prince Harry was not Prince Charles’ son, according to her bodyguard. Ken Wharfe, who was assigned to protect the “People’s Princess,” has written in his new book that there was no way Diana’s youngest son could have been fathered by James Hewitt.
In the book “Diana: Closely Guarded Secret,” Wharfe wrote when her affair with the former British Army officer started, Harry was already born. Therefore, the rampant speculations claiming Hewitt was Harry’s real father were not true.
“…the dates do not add up,” he said (via The Sun). Harry was born on Sep. 15, 1984, which means he was conceived around December of 1983. Diana met Hewitt in 1986.
Charles and Diana’s elder son, Prince William, was born in 1982.
Nevertheless, the rumours had greatly affected Diana because they involved her son. Wharfe said they angered Diana so much that she cried when she talked to him about them.
“I believe they were spread by people who called themselves friends of Charles, though whoever was originally responsible should be ashamed of themselves … both for peddling slanders and for being mathematically incompetent,” the former bodyguard wrote.
Diana, being a public figure, usually didn’t mind rumours and negative comments about herself. However, as the speculations were about her son’s paternity, she was deeply affected by them.
“The one person who knew beyond doubt the identity of Harry’s father was Diana, and she told me: ‘I don’t know how my husband and I did have Harry because by then he had gone back to his lady, but one thing that is certain is that we did.’”
The other woman mentioned was Camilla Parker Bowles, who is now Charles’ wife. Wharfe claimed Diana was so “shattered” by Charles’ betrayal that she had an affair herself.
Diana and Hewitt apparently usually met at an old cottage belonging to Hewitt’s mother. The minder added that Hewitt was “always seemed short of money,” even hinting to Diana that he wanted a sports car. Diana complied and gave him £ 16,000 in a briefcase to buy a TVR.
Their affair ended after five years. Hewitt had admitted to Inside Edition that he had considered committing suicide when they separated. Diana died with her lover, Dodi Fayed, when their car crashed in the Pont de l’Alma road tunnel in Paris in 1997.
