Queen Arrives in Perth for Meeting with Commonwealth Leaders
Queen Elizabeth has arrived in Perth for the Commonwealth leaders' meeting on Friday.
Premier Colin Barnett and his wife Lyn, as well as Defence Minister Stephen Smith, welcomed the monarch on tarmac, while a crowd of hundreds, including children, cheered for the Queen when she deplaned with Prince Phillip.
The last time the Queen was in WA was on March 30, 2000. It was a quick two-and-a-half day trip.
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will be in Perth until Saturday afternoon for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHGOM).
Meanwhile, CHGOM participants have been holding small meetings in relation to the main event, to deliberate on whether it is time to appoint a Commonwealth commissioner for democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as recommended by an Eminent Persons Group.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard has met Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Wednesday, and she urged him to ensure his country's reconciliation commission would disprove allegations that his government has abused human rights in Sri Lanka's recent civil war.
This developed as protesters have told the media they are set to march to the CHOGM venue on Friday, but they will stay outside restricted security zones.
Security is boosted in Perth, with hundreds of additional men from Australia and New Zealand flown in to assist in keeping law and order throughout the CHOGM.
