Renal Diet: What 'America's Got Talent' host Nick Cannon Should Know
After getting hospitalized because of a mild kidney failure, "America's Got Talent" host and comedian Nick Cannon will have to completely change his diet after being placed on a strict renal diet. With human kidneys being fragile as they are, what should people on the path of a renal diet know?
Cannon, who was hospitalized two weeks ago, had a mild kidney failure due to an overdose of protein, medication he was taking, and a lack of proper sustenance, ContactMusic.com reported. According to Mariah Carrey's hubby, he feels good despite being placed on a renal diet which "sucks."
So with all this talk about being placed on a renal diet, what exactly is it? Renal diet means being on a special diet, because of kidney failure, to control the amounts and types of foods and fluids that a person consumes.
But a renal diet takes planning from a dietician, and before the person who had the failed kidney gets the guidelines, it is best for him to be reminded of a few things, according to Diet-I.com.
Some need to know reminders are to avoid salt, salt substitutes, and anything that has a lot of potassium; avoid nuts, peanut butter, dried beans, seeds, and lentils; limit milk, fruit, and vegetable products; and cap fluids at 6 cups or 48 ounces or, according to Kidney.org, learn how much fluid one's body can safely drink.
And when a doctor does advise the patient to limit the amount of fluid, some tips that could help them get through the drought is to drink only when thirsty; brush teeth three to four times a day to avoid the mouth from dying; chew on a sugarless gum; and to take medications with sips of fluid, according to the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Depending on what the doctor or the dietician will require the patient, there are other things that should be controlled like phosphorus, potassium, protein, and sodium intake.
As for the case of Cannon who told MTV news that he cannot have any sodium, foods that he should avoid are the basic table salt, potato chips, nuts, bacon, cold cuts, cheese, soup that is instant, caned, or dehydrated, canned vegetables, and processed dinner mixes.
Of course, since salt is vital for food to have some taste, what can Nick do to have some more flavor? Rather than getting tempted to reach for the salt shaker, it is advised to season foods with spices, like garlic and oregano, and to use lemon.
