'Rick and Morty' season 3 spoilers: Justin Roiland needs four tequila shots to voice Drunk Rick in episode 4
The third season of "Rick and Morty" is currently under production. Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, the co-creators of the critically acclaimed animated series, recently posted a video to the Adult Swim Facebook page showing the latter -- who voices both Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith -- needing four shots of tequila to voice a scene from episode four of the forthcoming season.
In the video, Harmon reveals that he needed Roiland to get "especially drunk" for the fourth episode of "Rick and Moty season 3," encouraging his fellow co-creator to method act in an intoxicated state. "How many shots is the right amount of shots for Drunk Rick?" Roiland ponders, before downing his fourth shot of tequila. "This is my fourth shot, I'm definitely going to be in the pocket," Roiland says, before enacting his lines. Watch the video below.
Roiland is then seen mumbling his words and going off-script before telling associate producer Sydney Ryan that he's going to "need another shot" to continue production. After Ryan requests the voice-over artist to take a lengthier break between drinks, Roiland downs gulps another shot, which leads the producer to call the shoot "by far, the least productive and messiest recording day we've ever had" in the show's four-year history.
Rick and Morty season 3 release date: 13 more episodes from July
After toying with fans for nearly a year regarding the launch date of the third season, Adult Swim dropped the first episode titled "The Rickshank Rickdemption" on April Fools' Day. Harmon cited his quarrels with Roiland as the primary reason for the delay. "(Roiland and I) have fights all the time and then we have fights about why we’re having fights, well, we didn’t fight during season 2, that’s why it’s taking longer! All this fighting! So OK, let’s stop fighting," Harmon said during the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.
The first episode saw steady progression from pending season two storylines. After the Galactic Federation invades Earth, Morty and Summer summon the Council of Ricks in the pursuit of their imprisoned grandfather. Rick C-137, in trademark Rick fashion, manages to transport his mind into one of the other Ricks, crashing the meeting of the council before killing the rest of the Ricks.
After the Smiths were reunited at the end of the episode, the post credits scene shows Tammy alive and well. Tammy was last seen fighting Squanchy during the season two finale. As described aptly by The Independent, "things (episode 1) end(s) with Rick telling Morty this was his plan all along: to get Beth to divorce Jerry so he could be the house’s Alpha male and they can go on adventures all the time. All -- it should be noted -- to hopefully bring back McDonald’s delicious Mulan-sponsored Szechuan sauce."
The show's Twitter account has noted that the second episode, titled "Rickmancing the Stone," will air sometime in the summer. If the previous season is anything to go by, episode two could air in July. "Rick and Morty" season 3 will reportedly consist of 14 episodes.
