Rio 2016 Olympics: US basketball team almost loses to Australia, causes Twitter meltdown
Australia may have two heartbreaking losses in the ongoing Rio 2016 Olympics in cycling and basketball, but the 10-point lead in the Boomers’ game versus Team USA caused a Twitter meltdown on Wednesday night. Australia could have made basketball history by almost causing the world’s number one ranked team a major upset.
At halftime, Australia actually led by five points, but the US eventually caught up and ended the epic game 98-88. At half-time, Twitter was agog over the possibility that the US team could lose.
Tony Broderick asked, “Is today the day #AUS finally gets their revenge against #USA?” Jordan asked, “Can you imagine how incredible Bogut’s Twitter account will be if Australia win this?”
He was referring to Andrew Bogut, captain of Australia’s basketball team – ranked 11th. Bogut believes the Boomers had great opportunity to push the game. He added, “We still lost the game, it doesn’t mean anything,” Mashable quotes.
But the Dream Team even accused the Boomers of being a dirty team. Paul George, star of the Dream Team, shares, “It was an adjustment for us. This game kind of got out of hand with the chippy, physical play.” He adds, “We knew that going in the team has a knack for being a little dirty.”
NBA star Patty Mills contributed 30 points, Andrew Bogut 15, Matthew Delladova 11 points and David Anderson 13 points. For the Dream Team, top scorer was Carmelo Anthony with 31 points, followed by Kyrie Irving 19 points and Kevin Durant 13 points, reports Yahoo News.
