‘Riverdale' season 1 spoilers: Dark Betty Cooper fuels fan theories on Polly's existence; Lili Reinhart quick to shoot them down
Original air date on The CW: Thursdays
In Season 1 Episode 3 of “Riverdale,” fans saw a really dark side to golden girl Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart). Many also immediately speculated and questioned whether Betty’s older sister, Polly, really exists.
In the episode titled “Body Double,” Betty punished Chuck Clayton for shaming Veronica (Camilla Mendes) by handcuffing him in a hot tub and raising the water’s temperature to near boiling point. Betty, however, started to refer to Chuck as Jason Blossom and herself as Polly. Later, Betty denies remembering anything that happened.
“Riverdale” viewers opined that Betty suffers from Dissociative Personality Disorder. Polly and Jason used to date but eventually broke up, which deeply hurt Polly. Betty has been holding a grudge against her sister’s ex-boyfriend ever since, which could serve as motive for Jason’s murder. Other “Riverdale” viewers countered that Betty may not have the mental condition, and it seemed very unlikely that she had the issue her whole life.
Reinhart explained that Alice (Madchen Amick) is very controlling over Betty because she does not want her to have a mental breakdown like Polly. Meanwhile in “Riverdale,” only Alice and Veronica know about dark Betty, but fans are expecting Polly to come out soon.
According to ComicBook, Lili Reinhart immediately shot down rumours that Betty is psychotic. The “Riverdale” actress said that Betty’s brief episode is just a minor mental break, which every person can relate to. She added that Betty does not have a split personality or schizophrenia. She cares about Polly very much, and this is what caused her so much anger, anxiety and frustration – coping by putting her defences up. Reinhart said that Betty’s outburst in “Riverdale” is more of an alter ego than a split personality. The character has a bad side, just like everyone else. The CW posted a video of Reinhart talking about Betty [watch below].
In the meantime, all of Riverdale is still trying to solve the mystery behind Jason’s death. Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) is obsessed with knowing who her twin brother’s killer is that she cannot even pretend to befriend Betty for long. More about Polly is expected to be revealed later in “Riverdale” Season 1.
The episode that followed and recently aired, titled “The Last Picture Show,” focused on Archie (K.J. Apa), Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Miss Grundy (Sarah Habel). Grundy was found to have been keeping some secrets about her past and identity, which could tie her to Jason’s murder. She ended up being driven out of town after her relationship with Archie was discovered.
Meanwhile, viewers found out at the end of the episode that Jughead’s is actually homeless and has a South Side Serpent for a dad. “Riverdale” Season 1 Episode 5, titled “Heart of Darkness,” will air on Feb. 22, 2017 on The CW in the US and on SyFy in Australia. It also airs on Neftlix US and Netflix Australia.
