A recently released trailer of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” highlighted a Kyber crystal that is given to Jyn Erso by her mother. That scene led to a lot of speculation about whether the character is a Force sensitive. A new theory looks at just how significant the crystal will be in the film.

[Spoiler alert]

In a new video posted on YouTube, Mike Zeroh examines the role of the Kyber crystal that was revealed for the very first time in the trailer. For readers who are not familiar with them, these crystals are attuned to the Force and are found across the galaxy. The Jedi and the Sith use them to build their lightsabers.

Will the Kyber crystal have any significance in the storyline? Mike believes it does. However, he doesn’t think the fans will get to see Jyn wield a lightsaber in the film. Instead, the object will be of great emotional value to the character and it will remind her of her mother.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” will show some flashback scenes in order to set up Jyn Erso, explain Galen’s (Mads Mikkelsen) connection to Death Star and under what circumstances he was forced to work on the dreaded weapon.

Mike suggests that it is possible that Jyn’s mother was murdered by the Death Troopers, which will make the Empire the biggest enemy of the protagonist. The Kyber crystal may serve as a constant reminder of how the Death Star was built and how that affected the Erso family.

More details about Jyn’s childhood and the early years of the Death Star are available in the “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” prequel novel titled “Catalyst.” The wait is nearly over for the fans, as the film itself is releasing on Dec. 15 in Australia.
