The marriage of Katy Perry and Russell Brand was announced in 2010 had raised a few eyebrows from people who didn't believe that the British playboy could change his ways. It turns out he actually couldn't. The actor has candidly admitted why his marriage to the American pop star ended.

Brand has had a reputation of being a serial dater back in his home country. In fact, he had dated quite a number of women that UK tabloid The Sun named him the Shagger of the Year for three consecutive years from 2006 to 2008.

So when he started dating the younger Perry, many believed that they would not last and that Katy is just another fling. But as if to prove the doubters wrong, the two got married in 2010. But alas, they weren't mean to be. Or rather, Brand wasn't meant to change.

He filed for divorce after 14 months of their marriage, citing irreconcilable differences, and which was granted in July 2012. Both parties refused to reveal the real reason for their split, but the public has already an idea or two why.

And now Brand is talking about his failed marriage, saying that he loves women too much for monogamy.

"I've given over too much of my life to its pursuit. And I've probably harmed other people, by being selfish. And really, I'd like to be married. I'm just not transmitting that frequency of 'Soulmate! Soulmate!' I'm transmitting the frequency of 'Mmm!'" he told Esquire magazine.

"But I tried it and I loved it. I really think she's a lovely beautiful person [Katy Perry]. It's just hard isn't it? She's got a lot of options, I've got a lot of options, so you've got to really, really want it.

"Some of it's the fame, but I think getting married is ... you've got a whole other person that you've got to make as important as you!"

But if there's one thing that Brand wouldn't split from is stand-up comedy.

"Stand-up is not a frivolous thing. It's not a dangling appendage of my celebrity. It's my absolute core. Really the only thing that actually makes me raw is stand-up. When I'm doing it, it's beautiful."

Fans might have been devastated over the divorce, but Perry's mum was actually grateful.

In an interview with The Sun, Perry appeared to have a slip of the tongue when she said, "My mum thanks God every day for my divorce."

Brand's full interview with the UK magazine is available in its July issue.
